A powered alternative to a hand smoothing plane. Used to trim thin layers of wood from edges or surfaces that are too small to cut conveniently using a saw. E.g. trimming the tops, bottoms or edges of doors which have expanded and are now catching. In general is a tool to trim or smooth wooden things until they fit.

Typically used on wood which is too hard or too wide to be tackled with a manual smoothing plane, for example oak worktops or doors made of mahogany.
